Total internal reflectance: Depth resolution because the evanescent wave disappears after a couple hundred nanometers. (Or so.) Cooool.

Fluorescence microscopy: See only the stuff you’ve labeled, ’cause that’s what glows brightly.

TIR + FM = TIRFM.

And now make it scanning TIRFM … just ’cause scanning’s cooler still.

I really did get goosebumps. I really am a geek.

If you’re curious, the new user picture is an image of “darkness” from an air-cooled intensified CCD camera (5 minute exposure, so the actual background is pretty low.)
