Future abstract

Long time without an update. Lot going on, about which I shall post more later.

Today’s work-task: An abstract for a conference six months from now. Simple, really — 300-350 words summarizing what I’m going to be talking about, in language calculated to inspire everyone at the conference to come see my poster. One hitch: I haven’t actually done any of the work yet.

This isn’t anything new, of course; one always likes to show off the very latest results. Yet it feels rather odd to be writing so far in the future, particularly when this week we found out that some of the cooler bits of what we were planning to do may not be possible yet after all. Or at least will take a lot more work. And it’s hard to know how much of what I *want* to get working in the next six months will actually happen — it’d be embarassing to drastically overstate things and then show a poster on only a fifth of what I claimed. Yet it’d be equally dull to have a very “conservative” abstract and then come up with something really cool that nobody comes by to see. Of course, it’s my advisor who’ll ultimately decide which way to go — and he’s not anyone’s idea of a “conservative”.

At least it’ll be a nice trip to Quebec next fall.

ooh, Quebec. make sure to casually comment on the importance of nations sticking together while you’re there.
