A whole new set of jokes

Went to seminar this morning. A physics seminar, that apparently was almost all theory (along the lines of “these simulations show that really cool would happen if we do such-and-such to a mix of gas with just the right properties at just the right density… no, we haven’t identified any suitable gases yet…”). For the new postdoc. Getting more and more excited about that all the time. Uh-huh.
Actually I am, since, if the project “works”, it’ll be really cool. It’s just that it’s not really anything I’d ever imagined doing, so it’s taking some mental readjustment to get used to. And, while I can happily write articles about titrations for Wikipedia all night long, even hearing the word “Hermitian” after 6:00 p.m. makes my head feel funny.
So anyway. Seminar this morning. Her talk was about materials with negative refractive indices — mostly about how to prepare them in one particular way. And so she began (at 10:00) with the comment that “I was actually supposed to give two talks about how to make light move backwards today. The one way involves reversing time — so I’m delivering that talk from 10:00 to 9:00. Hahahahah!”
