As a professor at a small liberal arts college (not one of the &quot;top&quot; ones), who previously taught at a &quot;directional school&quot;, I can assure you that while research is important, your application will be judged on your teaching as well.  At my current institution, we prefer to hire new assistant profs with real (not just lab TA) experience.  Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.</description>
