Well, you figure, you take a little time to have some fun, and you won't get burned out on the project at hand. Which means you'd keep your interest in the project... which leads to faster finishing of stuff. Or if you think about it in a timing situation... person A and person B are in the same class together with the same assignment with the same due date. Person A is a sports nut and goes to team practice every day for 2 hours, then hangs out with friends for dinner each night before heading back to the dorm and sitting down to work on the project for a couple hours each day. Person B has no life, and just goes back to the dorm to work on the project, but becomes bored of it really quickly and starts dragging on working on it. B continually works on it though, knowing that it's got to get done, and so ends up spending 5-6 hours each day working on it.

They both finish it at the same time the night before it's due. Person A has spent only about half as much time on it as Person B does - thus, the person with the social life actually gets the work done faster.
