Good news and bad

Good: Job lead (found through a generous postdoc in my old lab) pays off, after a timely nudge from my old advisor! Interview at the end of the month. Suddenly nervous. Must remember dry-cleaning. I comfort myself with the thought that, while I do think I’d like this job, I’m not certain it’s the “perfect” one. (I.e., it’s not teaching.)
Better: Another job lead may pay off! And this one IS teaching, in a department which sounds pretty good for what I’d like to do – both teaching and research. It’s even in the state I went to college in, and to which my parents have thought about retiring…. Extremely neat, if it works out.
Helpful Old Advisor (HOA – I want there to be a W at the start) immediately sends an enthusiastic letter, which means that it’ll beat the rest of my application by at least several days… Still need to broach the topic with my current “advisor”. (“The sooner you write this letter,” I’ll say, “the sooner we’re both rid of each other.” OK, maybe not quite like that.)
Bad: My mom’s knee broke the other week, putting her in a brace for up to two months.
Worse: My childhood home is about to be enveloped by flames, from the sounds of the news from this distance. Woke up last night from a bad dream in which she was hobbling away from a wall of fire, while I struggle to get down there to rescue her, blocked by the lack of a job thanks to poor decisions made two years ago.
Sigh.
