Kill them

More from the Chronicle job-hunt forum, which I’m starting to like more and more –

“I have shared this before but here is what I have told my mother and mother-in-law:

“I teach XX history. That is what my specialty is and that is the only thing I am going to get hired to do. Each college needs at most one XX historian. And if they need one, they have one, who may keep her job for the next 40 years. Now I know you would like me to get a job at college-down-the-road, and so would I. So here is what you can do to help. Find the person there who teaches XX history. Kill them.”

(Semi-true for chemists as well…)

Quickie update on the Hobart U. situation — It sounds almost too good to be true, frankly. They want me to teach one class (lecture + lab), in instrumental analysis (not basic quant). Free rein on the textbook, the lab stuff, etc. After redoing the same class here (as part of a committee, even!) that’ll be a piece of cake… and I said so :)

(Famous last words? yeah, yeah… I also pointed out that I’d learned exactly what happens when the new broom tries to sweep too large an area at once.)
