Science? in Florida?

A while back Scripps decided to set up a branch in Florida. Specifically, in the county due south of where I grew up.

“Why not come work here?” people asked. “They’re doing science, you do science, it’s a great fit.”

“Not the same kind of thing,” I told people. They’re a lot more focused on the biological side of things; I’m much more interested in figuring out how to measure stuff. (Yes, my thesis used bones, but it would’ve been essentially the same work if I’d used bits of plastic instead. Or rocks, for that matter.)

Now? well… Max Planck Society Senate decides to establish a Florida Institute in the exact same place. First outside Europe. The press release is a bit vague, but C&E News describes the new Florida institute as “a bioimaging research institute that will support three directors and many visiting scientists”.

Here’s hoping it’s not just fluorescent labels and TEM…
